Kochi: A bishop of the
Jacobite Syrian Church, known for his radical views, has hit out at the
“baseless and reactionary myths among Christians in the state carrying
upper caste sensibility.” Bishop Geevarghese Coorilose, Metropolitan of
Niranam diocese, in a Facebook post lambasted the tendency among the
Christians to construct the family history by tracing their origins to
Kerala Brahmins known as Namboodiris. He said that henceforth he
would not attend any of the family conclaves, often held in the months
of May and December, one of the prime vehicles for bringing out the
micro-history of a particular family.
“Most of the annual family conclaves
known in Malayalam as 'Kudumbayoga Varshikam' are nothing but an attempt
to reinforce the upper caste identity and tradition constructed
artificially. The roots of all these people will be either a
Pakalomattom or Kalliyangal,” the bishop said. They claim that their
forefathers, supposed to be Namboodiri Brahmins, were converted to
Christianity by St. Thomas. “A family history will be written based on
such blunders,” he said.
“Such baseless and reactionary myths carrying upper caste sensibility
deserved to be smashed,” he added. He regretted that in the past he had
attended such functions due to factors such as personal relationships
but he would not do so in future. He said that no one should address him
as ‘Thirumeni,’ a word having a clear upper caste connotation. Stating
that he should be called simply as friend, father or formally bishop,
he also recalled the words of the late writer-cartoonist O.V. Vijayan
that English is the best weapon to counter caste. “We need to change,”
he said.

തന്നെ ഇനിമുതല്‍ തിരുമേനി എന്ന് വിളിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല. ഇല്ലങ്ങളിലെ ബ്രാഹ്മണരെ തോമാശ്ലീഹ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനിയാക്കിയെന്ന വാദം മിത്താണെന്നും ഇത്തരം അബദ്ധങ്ങള്‍ തകര്‍ക്കപ്പെടണമെന്നും മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത പറഞ്ഞു.
